The Importance of Indoor Air Quality in Your Home

Did you know that your home’s air is far more polluted than the air outdoors? Like it or not, indoor air quality is often far worse than what we find outside of our homes. Here are a few reasons why good indoor air quality is crucial to your family’s health and comfort.

Increased allergies in Charlotte, NC

We typically tend to think of spring as allergy season in Charlotte. However, if you have poor indoor air quality, you could experience allergy season year-round in your home. Dust, pollen and countless other allergens can make staying indoors miserable. Improved indoor air quality will ensure your family breathes easy throughout the year.

Mold health effects

One of the major concerns for homeowners in the Charlotte area is mold growth in the home. When humidity levels are too high, mold and mildew can grow rapidly throughout the HVAC system. This can lead to coughing, skin irritation, and even respiratory illness. Preventing mold growth is a key component of maintaining good air quality.

Chemicals and other pollutants in your home

Aside from natural allergens, chemicals can have an immense impact on your indoor air quality. Chemical vapors from cleaning products can have serious health effects for the family. In addition, carbon dioxide from your gas-powered appliances can be a major issue.

Indoor air quality tips

Fortunately, good indoor air quality is not hard to achieve. Change your air filters at least once a month to prevent allergens from filling the air. Also, invest in a whole-house dehumidifier to prevent mold growth. Finally, you can remove many harmful toxins from the air with a houseplant such as a boston fern or a ficus. You also need to make sure all of your carbon dioxide and smoke detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries.

  2. I didn’t know that mold and mildew can cause skin irritation and respiratory illness. My son has been coughing a lot lately and he isn’t sick. If it has something to do with mold in the air, maybe I should call a service to perform an environmental assessment on my house.
